Mentoring in the Career Development of Nurse Administrators: Experiences of Nurse Administrators and Factors Regarding the Mentor

In the present study, we elucidated the experiences of nurse administrators and thecharacteristics of their mentors (factors regarding the mentor) as factors related to the mentoringnurse administrators at hospitals receive from their mentors in their career development asadministrators. The objective of this study was to investigate measures for promoting the careerdevelopment of administrators. A self-report questionnaire survey was conducted on a total of3911 nurse administrators (senior-level nurses and higher positions) at one of 117 hospitalsnationwide. The results of analysis were as follows. 1. While senior nurses and head nursesdeveloped their careers as nurse administrators within a given hospital, deputy directors ofnursing and those in higher positions were more likely to have experience working as a nurseadministrator at multiple hospitals. 2. Most nurse administrators had three to five mentors, whoconsisted predominantly of superiors at work, and met their primary mentor in their early 30s. 3.The education and guidance received by subjects upon becoming nurse administrators variedgreatly among individuals, indicating a great need in the future for establishment of education andguidance systems for new nurse administrators.
